# The Art of Conciseness

Writing Less to Say More

Conciseness is one of the hardest skills to master in any language. In Portuguese, where elaborate constructions are common, learning to write concisely is especially valuable.

Common Sources of Wordiness

1. Unnecessary adverbs and adjectives:

  • Wordy: É absolutamente essencial e totalmente necessário que...
  • Concise: É essencial que...

2. Redundant expressions (pleonasms):

  • Subir para cima → Subir (to go up)
  • Elo de ligação → Elo (link)
  • Consenso geral → Consenso (consensus)
  • Há anos atrás → Há anos (years ago)

3. Excessive nominalization:

  • Wordy: Procedeu-se à realização de uma avaliação
  • Concise: Avaliou-se

Techniques for Concise Writing

  • Remove filler → No que diz respeito a → Quanto a
  • Use active voice → Foi decidido pela equipa → A equipa decidiu
  • Replace phrases → Com o objetivo de → Para
  • Cut redundancy → Cada um dos membros → Cada membro

The Power of Short Sentences

Long Portuguese sentences can be broken down:

  • Before: Tendo em consideração todos os fatores que foram previamente mencionados no decorrer da reunião que teve lugar na passada segunda-feira, chegámos à conclusão de que...
  • After: Considerando os fatores discutidos na reunião de segunda-feira, concluímos que...

When Conciseness Matters Most

  • Emails and professional communication
  • Executive summaries
  • Headlines and titles
  • Instructions and procedures

Remember: Conciseness does not mean sacrificing clarity. The goal is to express ideas with the fewest words necessary while maintaining precision.

    Há dois anos, fizemos isto.

Há already implies ago; adding atrás is redundant.

  • No que diz respeito à questão do orçamento...
    Quanto ao orçamento...

Replace the wordy prepositional phrase with the concise quanto a.

  • Procedeu-se à realização de um estudo.
    Realizou-se um estudo.
