Discussing the future of education in Portuguese introduces cleft sentences and the compound future for emphasis and prediction.

Cleft sentences (frases clivadas) Emphasise a specific element: É a tecnologia que vai mudar a educação. (It is technology that will change education.) Structure: É + focus + que + rest of sentence. This highlights what matters most.

The compound future (futuro composto) Expresses what will have been completed: Até 2030, teremos implementado novas metodologias. (By 2030, we will have implemented new methodologies.) Formed with ter in the future + past participle.

Expressing opinions about the future Acredito que a educação vai... (I believe education will...), É provável que as escolas venham a... (It is likely that schools will...). Note: é provável que triggers the subjunctive.

Contrasting present and future Atualmente... no entanto, no futuro... (Currently... however, in the future...). Se compararmos o ensino de hoje com o de amanhã... (If we compare today's teaching with tomorrow's...).

Expressions

  • É a tecnologia que vai mudar...Cleft sentence for emphasis
  • Teremos implementado até 2030Compound future for deadlines
  • É provável que venham a...Likelihood with subjunctive
  • Se compararmos o ensino de hojeFuture subjunctive comparison

Common mistakes

  • Teremos implementar
    Teremos implementado

The compound future uses the past participle (implementado), not the infinitive.

  • É provável que as escolas vão mudar.
É provável que as escolas venham a mudar.

'É provável que' triggers the subjunctive; periphrastic future needs 'venham a' + infinitive, not indicative 'vão'.

  • Se comparamos o ensino
    Se compararmos o ensino

After se for future reference, use the future subjunctive: compararmos.

  • A educação do futuro será mais melhor
A educação do futuro será melhor

Melhor is already comparative. Do not add mais before it.
