Advanced reported speech for quotes *O autor afirmou que a sociedade estava em crise.* (The author stated that society was in crisis.) When reporting what an author wrote, shift tenses: present → imperfect, preterite → pluperfect.

Subjunctive with opinion expressions *Não creio que este romance seja uma obra-prima.* (I do not believe this novel is a masterpiece.) After negative opinion verbs (*não creio que*, *duvido que*), use the subjunctive.

Describing literary style *A prosa é fluida e envolvente.* (The prose is fluid and engaging.) *O narrador é pouco fiável.* (The narrator is unreliable.) Use adjectives to characterise writing style.

Recommending books *Aconselho este livro a quem goste de ficção histórica.* (I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction.) Note: *a quem goste* uses the subjunctive because the audience is indefinite.
