Nuancing Your Speech in Japanese

At B2 level, you need to go beyond simple connectors like でも and しかし. Japanese offers a rich set of nuancing expressions that allow you to express subtle contrasts, concessions, and qualifications.

Concession Connectors

  • にもかかわらず — expresses "despite" with a formal tone: *努力したにもかかわらず、結果は出なかった。* (Despite the effort, no results came.)
  • とはいえ — "having said that," softens a previous statement: *便利だ。とはいえ、問題もある。* (It's convenient. Having said that, there are problems.)

Contrast and Reversal

  • むしろ — "rather / instead," redirects the point: *難しいというより、むしろ面倒だ。* (Rather than difficult, it's more troublesome.)
  • かえって — "on the contrary," indicates an unexpected reversal: *手伝ったつもりが、かえって迷惑をかけた。* (I meant to help, but on the contrary caused trouble.)

Hedging Expressions

To avoid sounding too absolute, use:

  • *必ずしも~とは限らない* — Not necessarily...
  • *どちらかというと* — If anything / leaning toward...
  • *ある意味で* — In a sense...

Expressions

  • にもかかわらずTo express despite formally
  • とはいえTo soften a previous point
  • むしろ~と言えるTo redirect an argument
  • かえって逆効果だTo say it backfired
  • 必ずしもそうとは限らないTo say not necessarily
  • どちらかというとTo express a mild preference

Common mistakes

  • 雨にもかかわらず、でも出かけた。
    雨にもかかわらず、出かけた。

にもかかわらず already means despite, so adding でも is redundant.

  • むしろは難しい。
    むしろ難しい。

むしろ is an adverb and does not take the particle は after it.

  • とはいうと、問題もある。
    とはいえ、問題もある。

The correct form is とはいえ (having said that), not とはいうと.

  • かえて迷惑をかけた。
    かえって迷惑をかけた。

The correct form is かえって (on the contrary) with って, not かえて.

  • 必ずしも正しいではない。
    必ずしも正しいとは限らない。

必ずしも requires とは限らない pattern, not simple negation.
