Expressions

• 自分(じぶん)で組(く)み立(た)ててみます。I will try assembling it myself.
• 水漏(みずも)れがあるので、修理(しゅうり)してもらいたいです。There is a leak; I want to have it repaired.
• 次(つぎ)に、ネジで棚(たな)を固定(こてい)します。Next, fix the shelf with screws.
• 壁(かべ)を塗(ぬ)ってみたら、きれいになりました。I tried painting the wall and it turned out nice.

Common mistakes

• ✗棚の取り付ける方を教えてください。
  ✓棚(たな)の取(と)り付(つ)け方(かた)を教(おし)えてください。

  〜方 attaches to the verb STEM (masu-stem), not the dictionary form. 取り付ける → 取り付け + 方.

• ✗最初、壁の位置を決めます。
  ✓まず、壁(かべ)の位置(いち)を決(き)めます。

  For step-by-step instructions, use まず (first), not 最初 which means the very beginning of something rather than a first step.

• ✗自分で修理をしてみます。
  ✓自分(じぶん)で修理(しゅうり)してみます。

  With する-verbs, drop the を before してみる. 修理してみる flows naturally; 修理をしてみる sounds unnatural.

• ✗壁を塗るてみましょう。
  ✓壁(かべ)に塗(ぬ)ってみましょう。

  てみる attaches to the て-form: 塗って (not 塗るて). Also use に for the surface being painted.

• ✗次、ネジで固定します。
  ✓次(つぎ)に、ネジで固定(こてい)します。

  Use 次に (with particle に) for sequential instructions, not 次 alone.
