For polite requests to neighbours, use the Konjunktiv II with würden, könnten, and wollte.
Polite request patterns:
- Würden Sie bitte die Musik leiser machen? (Would you please turn the music down?)
- Könnten Sie vielleicht den Hund reinbringen? (Could you perhaps bring the dog inside?)
- Ich wollte fragen, ob Sie das Fenster schließen könnten. (I wanted to ask if you could close the window.)
Softer formulation with "ich wollte":
Using ich wollte fragen, ob... (I wanted to ask if...) is a very common German way to make a request even softer. The ob-clause triggers verb-final word order.
