Conditional Sentences with "Als...Dan"

Dutch conditional sentences use als (if) to introduce a condition and optionally dan (then) for the result. The key challenge is word order — subclauses use SOV (Subject-Object-Verb).

Word Order in Als-clauses

In the als-clause, the verb moves to the end (SOV order):

Je bespaart geld. → Als je geld bespaart, ...
Je geeft minder uit. → Als je minder uitgeeft, ...
De huur is te hoog. → Als de huur te hoog is, ...

Complete Sentences

Als je minder uitgeeft, (dan) kun je meer besparen.
Als je meer verdient, (dan) betaal je meer belasting.
Als de kosten te hoog zijn, (dan) moeten we bezuinigen.

Dan is Optional

Dan can be omitted, but the result clause always starts with the verb (inversion):

Als je zuinig bent, (dan) bespaar je veel geld.

Separable Verbs in Subclauses

Separable verbs rejoin in subclauses: *uitgeeft* (not *geeft uit*), *rondkomt* (not *komt rond*).

Remember: Main clause = verb second (V2). Subclause = verb final (SOV).

Common mistakes

Als je minder uitgeeft, kun je meer besparen.
Als de huur te hoog is, moeten we verhuizen.
Als je zuinig bent, bespaar je veel geld.
Ik moet bezuinigen op de vaste lasten.
Het is moeilijk om rond te komen met dit salaris.
