Mixed Conditionals (condicionales mixtos)
In Spanish, mixed conditionals combine different tenses in the condition (si) and the result. They are useful for discussing complex hypothetical situations, common in the context of space exploration.
Mixed Type 1: past condition → present result
Si + pluperfect subjunctive, present conditional
- *Si hubiéramos invertido más en tecnología espacial, tendríamos bases en la Luna.* (If we had invested more in space technology, we would have bases on the Moon.)
Mixed Type 2: present condition → past result
Si + imperfect subjunctive, conditional perfect
- *Si la gravedad no fuera un problema, habríamos colonizado Marte hace años.* (If gravity were not a problem, we would have colonized Mars years ago.)
Forms review
- Pluperfect subjunctive: *hubiera/hubiese + past participle*
- Conditional perfect: *habría + past participle*
- Imperfect subjunctive: *-ra* or *-se* (fuera/fuese)
These structures are common in scientific debates and speculative texts.

Si habríamos invertido más, tendríamos bases lunares.Si hubiéramos invertido más, tendríamos bases lunares. After si, never use the conditional. Use the pluperfect subjunctive (hubiera/hubiese).
Si la gravedad no sería un problema, habríamos ido a Marte.Si la gravedad no fuera un problema, habríamos ido a Marte. In the si clause, use the imperfect subjunctive (fuera), never the conditional (sería).
El cohete aterrizó sobre Marte.El cohete aterrizó en Marte.Use aterrizar en (a place), not aterrizar sobre. Sobre would imply landing over, not on the surface.
La sonda ha enviado imágenes desde hace dos años.La sonda lleva dos años enviando imágenes. For an ongoing action from the past, use llevar + gerund in Spanish, not the present perfect with desde hace.
Si hubiéramos tenido más tiempo, colonizaríamos Marte.Si hubiéramos tenido más tiempo, habríamos colonizado Marte. When the condition is in the pluperfect (past unreal), the result should be in the conditional perfect (habríamos colonizado), not the present conditional.
