Tener que + infinitive (obligation)
To express obligation or necessity in Spanish, use tener que + infinitive:
- *Tengo que limpiar la cocina.* (I have to clean the kitchen.)
- *Tienes que barrer el suelo.* (You have to sweep the floor.)
- *Tenemos que sacar la basura.* (We have to take out the trash.)
Remember to conjugate tener for each person: tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen.
No tener que (absence of obligation)
To say you do NOT have to do something, simply add no:
- *No tienes que planchar hoy.* (You don't have to iron today.)
- *No tenemos que cocinar, vamos a un restaurante.* (We don't have to cook, we're going to a restaurant.)
Important: *No tener que* means there is no obligation. It does NOT mean prohibition. For prohibition, use no debes or no puedes:
- *No debes tirar basura aquí.* (You must not throw trash here.) — prohibition
- *No tienes que tirar la basura hoy.* (You don't have to take out the trash today.) — no obligation
