Texting in Spanish
Text messages in Spanish are often shorter and more informal than spoken language. Knowing common abbreviations and closings will help you write natural messages.
Common abbreviations
Spanish texters shorten words to save time:
- tb or tmb = también (also)
- q = que (that/what)
- xq = porque / por qué (because / why)
- x = por (for/by)
- d = de (of/from)
- dnd = dónde (where)
- msg = mensaje (message)
- grx or grs = gracias (thanks)
Informal tone
In messages, Spanish speakers often:
- Drop the ¿ opening question mark: *Qué tal?* instead of *¿Qué tal?*
- Use lowercase throughout: *hola q tal* instead of *Hola, ¿qué tal?*
- Skip accents: *esta* instead of *está*
Greetings and closings
- Hola! / Ey! — Hi! / Hey!
- Qué tal? — How are you?
- Nos vemos! — See you!
- Un beso / Bss — A kiss / Kisses (friendly)
- Un abrazo — A hug
- Hasta luego! — See you later!
Expressing laughter

Lo siento por tardar.Perdona por tardar.Lo siento is too formal for casual texting; perdona is the natural choice between friends
Te miro mañana.Nos vemos mañana.Te miro means I look at you; nos vemos (we see each other) is the correct farewell
Envía a mí un mensaje.Mándame un mensaje. / Envíame un mensaje.The indirect object pronoun me is attached to the imperative, not placed separately
Bss (in a formal email)Un cordial saludoBss (besos) is only appropriate in casual messages between friends
Contéstame al mensaje.Respóndeme al mensaje.Responder is more natural than contestar for replying to written messages
