Social media in Spanish

Social media vocabulary is part of everyday Spanish. Learning how to talk about posts, likes, and followers will help you engage in casual conversations.

Talking about what you follow

The verb seguir (to follow) is a stem-changing verb (e → i):

  • *Yo sigo a muchos influencers.* — I follow many influencers.
  • *¿Sigues a este cantante?* — Do you follow this singer?
  • *Ella no sigue a nadie.* — She doesn't follow anyone.

Note the personal a before people: *sigo a María*, not *sigo María*.

Asking about content

  • ¿Has visto...? — Have you seen...?
  • *¿Has visto la foto de Ana?* — Have you seen Ana's photo?
  • *¿Has visto el vídeo que publicó?* — Have you seen the video he posted?

Reacting to content

  • Me gusta — I like (it): *Me gusta tu foto.* — I like your photo.
  • Me encanta — I love (it): *Me encanta este vídeo.* — I love this video.
  • Qué guay! — How cool! (Spain)
  • Qué chido! — How cool! (Mexico)

Digital vocabulary

  • Publicar — to post: *Voy a publicar una historia.* — I'm going to post a story.
  • Compartir — to share: *¿Puedes compartir este enlace?* — Can you share this link?
  • Comentar — to comment: *Comenta en mi foto.* — Comment on my photo.
  • Etiquetar — to tag: *Te etiqueté en la foto.* — I tagged you in the photo.

Ejemplo: "¿Has visto la historia de Carlos? — Sí, me encanta. Le puse un me gusta y un comentario." — "Have you seen Carlos's story? — Yes, I love it. I gave it a like and a comment."
