Writing a Short Story in Russian

A Russian short story (рассказ) follows a classic narrative arc and uses rich literary language to create atmosphere and depth.

Narrative Structure (Сюжетная структура)

1. Завязка (Opening) Introduce the setting, characters, and initial situation.

  • *Был поздний вечер, когда…* (It was late evening when…)
  • *Никита никогда не думал, что…* (Nikita never imagined that…)

2. Развитие действия (Rising action) Build tension through events and character decisions.

3. Кульминация (Climax) The decisive moment — the highest point of conflict.

4. Развязка (Resolution) How events conclude. Can be open-ended in modern Russian prose.

Aspect Usage in Narrative

In Russian narrative, aspect choice is crucial for storytelling:

Imperfective — for background, ongoing actions, setting the scene:

  • *Дождь шёл всю ночь. Ветер завывал в трубах.* (The rain fell all night. The wind howled.)

Perfective — for plot events, actions that move the story forward:

  • *Вдруг дверь открылась. Он вошёл и остановился.* (Suddenly the door opened. He entered and stopped.)

Literary Devices (Художественные приёмы)

  • Сравнение (simile): *Её голос был похож на шёпот ветра.*
  • Метафора (metaphor): *Город спал, укутавшись в туман.*
  • Олицетворение (personification): *Листья шептали что-то непонятное.*
  • Повтор (repetition): *Она ждала. Всегда ждала. Ждала всю жизнь.*

Time Expressions for Narrative

  • *В тот день…* (On that day…)
  • *Несколько часов спустя…* (A few hours later…)
  • *Неожиданно…* (Unexpectedly…)
  • *Когда всё закончилось,…* (When it was all over…)

표현

  • вдруг оказалось, чтоIt suddenly turned out that — for plot revelations
  • он/она не мог(ла) неHe/she couldn't help but
  • время шлоTime passed — for advancing the narrative timeline
  • в тот момент, когдаAt the moment when
  • ему/ей показалось, чтоIt seemed to him/her that
  • охваченный/аяSeized by / overwhelmed by (+ instrumental)
  • как будтоAs if / as though

자주 하는 실수

  • Он шёл по улице и вдруг остановился и увидел кошку.
Он шёл по улице и вдруг остановился: перед ним сидела кошка.

Chaining too many verbs with «и» creates weak, flat prose. Use a colon or restructure to vary sentence rhythm and add narrative tension. The original also repeats «и» awkwardly.

  • Пошёл дождь. Мария побежала домой. Она была мокрая.
Пошёл дождь. Мария побежала домой — насквозь промокшая, но счастливая.

Short, choppy sentences without detail create flat narration. Combine and enrich with descriptive participial phrases to create more vivid, literary prose.

  • Охваченный страхом, лес казался враждебным.
Охваченный страхом, он воспринимал лес как враждебный.

The short participial phrase «охваченный страхом» must agree with the grammatical subject of the main clause. «Лес» (the forest) cannot be «охваченный страхом» — a person can. The subject of the деепричастие must be the same as that of the main verb.

  • Время проходило медленно, очень медленно, медленнее всего.
    Время тянулось мучительно медленно.

Layering synonymous intensifiers without purpose weakens the text. A single precise verb «тянулось» (dragged/crawled) with one adverb is more expressive and literary than repetitive qualifiers.

  • В кульминации герой узнал, что его друг был предатель.
В кульминации герой узнал, что его друг был предателем.

After «быть» (to be), the noun predicate takes the instrumental case (предателем), not the nominative (предатель). This applies in past tense clauses with «был».

  • Рассказ написан в первом лице. Герой рассказывает о себе. Он использует слово «я».
Рассказ написан от первого лица: герой ведёт повествование от своего имени, что создаёт ощущение близости.

Avoid repeating the same idea in consecutive short sentences. Combine into one cohesive sentence using a colon and a subordinate clause for B2-level writing.

  • Она смотрела на него. Она думала о прошлом. Она хотела что-то сказать.
Она смотрела на него и думала о прошлом — хотела что-то сказать, но не решалась.

Three successive sentences with the same subject «Она» create monotonous rhythm. Combine and use contrasting conjunctions (но) to create internal tension and vary the prose rhythm.
