Space Exploration

Portuguese uses specific vocabulary and structures to discuss space and scientific exploration:

Nominalization for scientific concepts:

*A descoberta de água em Marte revolucionou a exploração espacial.* (The discovery of water on Mars revolutionized space exploration.)

Future subjunctive for space milestones:

*Quando o ser humano pisar Marte, será um marco histórico.* (When humans set foot on Mars, it will be a historic milestone.)

Compound tenses for ongoing research:

*Os cientistas têm investigado a possibilidade de vida extraterrestre.* (Scientists have been investigating the possibility of extraterrestrial life.)

Note: European Portuguese uses *foguetão* (rocket) while Brazilian Portuguese uses *foguete*. Similarly, EP uses *nave espacial* more formally than the colloquial alternatives.

In European Portuguese, 'foguetão' is standard; 'foguete' is the Brazilian variant.

Quando os astronautas chegarem a Marte...
After 'quando' referring to an uncertain future, use the future subjunctive ('chegarem'), not the future indicative.
~~A sonda tem enviado dados há 2020.~~
A sonda tem enviado dados desde 2020.
Use 'desde' with a specific year. 'Há' is for durations ('há cinco anos').
