Making a Complaint
The "Livro de Reclamações"
In Portugal, every business must have a complaints book (*livro de reclamações*). It is your legal right to use it:
- Quero o livro de reclamações, por favor. *(I want the complaints book, please.)*
Expressing Dissatisfaction with the Subjunctive
Use the presente do conjuntivo after expressions of desire or demand:
- Exijo que me devolvam o dinheiro. *(I demand that you return my money.)*
- Quero que resolvam este problema. *(I want you to solve this problem.)*
Polite but Firm Language
Use the imperfeito or condicional for polite complaints:
- Queria falar com o responsável. *(I wanted to speak to the manager.)*
- Gostaria de fazer uma reclamação. *(I would like to make a complaint.)*
Describing the Problem
- O produto tem um defeito. *(The product has a defect.)*
- O serviço foi péssimo. *(The service was terrible.)*
- Não funciona como deveria. *(It doesn't work as it should.)*
Tip: The "livro de reclamações" is taken very seriously in Portugal. Complaints are reviewed by regulatory authorities.
