Idiomatic Expressions in Polish
Polish idioms (*frazeologizmy*) are fixed phrases where the meaning cannot be deduced from individual words.
Key concepts:
- Idiom — a phrase with a non-literal, fixed meaning
- Literal vs. figurative — *dosłownie* vs. *w przenośni*
- Collocation — words that naturally co-occur (*kolokacja*)
- Fixed expression — a set phrase that cannot be modified (*utarte wyrażenie*)
How idioms work:
Polish idioms often derive from historical, cultural, or agricultural contexts.
- *Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy* — Not my circus, not my monkeys (not my problem)
- *Lać wodę* — to pour water (to ramble, to say nothing of substance)
- *Mieć coś na końcu języka* — to have something on the tip of your tongue
Using idioms at C1 level:
