Euphemism and Dysphemism in Polish
Euphemism (*eufemizm*) replaces an uncomfortable, taboo, or offensive word with a milder, more socially acceptable expression.
Dysphemism (*dysfemizm*) does the opposite — deliberately using a harsher or more offensive word to create emphasis or irony.
Common euphemism categories in Polish:
- Death: *odejść* (to depart), *zasnąć na wieki* (to fall asleep forever)
- Illness: *mieć problemy zdrowotne* (to have health problems)
- Aging: *osoba w dojrzałym wieku* (a person of mature age)
- Dismissal: *rozstać się z firmą* (to part ways with the company)
Why euphemisms matter at C1:
A C1 speaker must recognize when language is being "softened" or when an author is deliberately harsh.
- Euphemisms appear heavily in political and corporate language
- Dysphemisms signal criticism, irony, or informality
- The same concept can have neutral, euphemistic, and dysphemistic forms
