Polysemy and Ambiguity in Polish
Many Polish words have multiple meanings that require context to disambiguate.
Examples of polysemic words:
- *zamek* = castle OR lock (on a door/bag) OR zip (fastener)
- *kot* = cat OR (colloquial) a cool person
- *pilny* = urgent OR diligent/hardworking
- *trzymać* = to hold / to keep / to keep to (a rule)
Sources of ambiguity in Polish:
- Homonyms: *para* (couple / steam / pair)
- Polysemy: *głowa* (head of body / head of state / intelligence)
- Grammatical ambiguity: *Widziałem go z kimś* — I saw him with someone, or someone saw him?
How to disambiguate at C1:
- Use *dosłownie* (literally) or *w przenośni* (figuratively) as markers
- Add context: *zamek drzwiowy* (door lock), *zamek błyskawiczny* (zip/zipper)
- Rephrase: if *pilny* is ambiguous, say *naglący* (urgent) or *pracowity* (hardworking)
