Analyzing Media Discourse in Polish
Critical media analysis requires understanding how language shapes reality.
Key analytical concepts:
- Narracja (narrative): the story a medium tells about events — what is included and excluded
- Framing: how an issue is presented — choosing which aspects to highlight
- *kryzys migracyjny* vs. *napływ uchodźców* — same event, different frames
- Stronniczość (bias): systematic slanting toward a viewpoint, often subtle
Linguistic markers to watch:
- Loaded adjectives: *zbrodniczy reżim*, *brutalni demonstranci*
- Passive voice to hide agency: *zostało podjęte* (was taken) — by whom?
- Nominalization: *eskalacja napięć* instead of *napięcia rosną*
- Quotation marks for irony: *"reformy"* implies scare-quoting the term
Analysing Polish media: look for *przemilczenia* (things left unsaid) and *słowa-klucze* (keywords) that activate emotional schemas.
