Korean dialects reflect the country's geography, history, and social dynamics in fascinating ways. 표준어 (Standard Korean) is based on the educated Seoul dialect and is used in media, education, and formal settings. However, regional dialects carry enormous cultural weight. The 경상도 사투리 (Gyeongsang dialect, spoken in Busan and Daegu) is known for its pitch-accent system — where tone distinguishes meaning — giving it a distinctive sharp, direct quality. The 전라도 사투리 (Jeolla dialect) has a softer, more melodious rhythm and is associated with traditional Korean music and culture. The 제주도 방언 (Jeju dialect) is so distinct that it is sometimes classified as a separate language — Jeju people historically used it as a code among themselves. Code-switching between dialect and standard Korean is socially meaningful: speaking dialect with family conveys intimacy and identity; switching to standard signals formality. At C2, you should be able to identify dialect features and discuss their sociolinguistic significance.
