Language is not merely description — it is action. 화행론 (Speech Act Theory) teaches us that when a Korean speaker says *약속할게요* (I promise), they are not describing a promise; they are performing one. These 수행문 (performatives) — promising, apologizing, ordering, declaring — do things in the world. 함축 (implicature) is even more powerful: a Korean speaker who responds to an invitation with *글쎄요...* (Hmm, well...) is not being uncertain — they are politely declining without explicit refusal, protecting both parties' face. 전제 (presupposition) embeds assumptions into statements: *요즘도 야근해요?* (Are you still working overtime?) presupposes the person was overworking before. In Korean, 공손성 (politeness) operates through complex honorific systems that encode social power and relationship. Understanding 화용론 (pragmatics) means reading not just what is said but what is achieved through saying it — the difference between linguistic competence and true communicative mastery.
