Descriptive Verbs and -아/어요 Endings
In Korean, adjectives function as verbs called descriptive verbs. They conjugate just like action verbs.
-아요/어요 present tense endings:
- Stems with ㅏ or ㅗ as last vowel → -아요: 작다 → 작아요 (is small)
- All other vowels → -어요: 크다 → 크어요 → 커요 (is tall)
- 하다 verbs → -해요: 친절하다 → 친절해요 (is kind)
Key descriptive verbs:
- 크다 → 커요 (is big/tall)
- 작다 → 작아요 (is small/short)
- 젊다 → 젊어요 (is young)
- 예쁘다 → 예뻐요 (is pretty)
To describe someone, use [Subject] + [descriptive verb]:
- 오빠가 키가 커요 — My older brother is tall
- 친구가 친절해요 — My friend is kind

자주 하는 실수
그 사람은 키가 많아요그 사람은 키가 커요Use 크다 (tall/big) not 많다 (many) for height
그녀는 예뻐 있어요그녀는 예뻐요Adjectives do not combine with 있어요; use the adjective ending directly
그는 머리가 길다 있어요그는 머리가 길어요Do not add 있어요 after an adjective; conjugate it directly
그 여자는 뚱뚱 해요그 여자는 뚱뚱해요하다 adjectives are written without a space: 뚱뚱하다
