Family Terms and Possessive Particle 의
Korean family terms change based on the speaker's gender, not the subject's gender.
For female speakers:
- 오빠 — older brother
- 언니 — older sister
For male speakers:
- 형 — older brother
- 누나 — older sister
Possessive particle 의: Similar to "of" or "'s" in English.
- 제 가족 — my family (제 = my, informal/polite)
- 어머니의 이름 — my mother's name
- In conversation, 의 is often shortened or dropped: 우리 엄마 (our/my mom)
Note: Koreans often say 우리 (our) instead of 내/제 (my) for family:
- 우리 엄마 — my mom (lit. "our mom")
- 우리 아빠 — my dad

자주 하는 실수
저는 오빠가 있어요 (male speaker)저는 형이 있어요Male speakers use 형 for older brother — 오빠 is used by female speakers
제 언니 (male speaker)제 누나Male speakers say 누나 for older sister — 언니 is for female speakers
제 엄마 (formal context)어머니 / 우리 엄마In formal situations use 어머니 — 엄마 is informal. In casual speech 우리 엄마 is natural
우리 동생 오빠예요제 동생이에요 / 남동생이에요동생 already means younger sibling — to specify gender say 남동생 (younger brother) or 여동생 (younger sister)
가족이 오 명이에요가족이 다섯 명이에요For counting people (명), use native Korean numbers — 다섯 not Sino-Korean 오
