Talking About Friends in Korean
Korean uses special words to address older friends or siblings depending on your gender. This is unique to Korean culture.
Key terms by speaker gender:
- Boy speaking: 형 (older brother), 누나 (older sister)
- Girl speaking: 오빠 (older brother), 언니 (older sister)
Saying you have a friend:
- 친구가 있어요 → I have a friend
- 친구가 없어요 → I have no friends
Talking about closeness:
- 우리는 친해요 → We are close
- 제일 친한 친구 → best friend (closest friend)
Making plans together:
- 같이 공부해요 → We study together
- 친구를 만나요 → I meet a friend
The particle 를/을 marks the object: 친구를 만나다 (meet a friend).
