Even native Japanese speakers regularly fall into linguistic traps. 重複表現 (redundant expressions) like 頭痛が痛い (headache hurts — 痛い is already in 頭痛) or まず最初に (first firstly) are extremely common mistakes. The ら抜き言葉 debate continues: 食べれる vs 食べられる — the shortened form is ubiquitous in speech but remains non-standard. Similarly, さ入れ言葉 adds unnecessary さ: 読まさせていただく instead of 読ませていただく. Many expressions are misunderstood even by natives: 的を射る (hit the mark) is often confused with 的を得る; 敷居が高い originally means feeling too ashamed to return somewhere, not that something is too high-level; 役不足 means the role is too small for the person, not that someone is inadequate. The proverb 情けは人の為ならず means kindness ultimately benefits yourself, though many think it means being kind is pointless. At C2 level, knowing these traps demonstrates deeper mastery than most natives possess.

자주 하는 실수

  • 役不足 meaning not good enough for the role
役不足 means the role is too easy/small for the person

Most people use this backwards; 力不足 is the correct term for someone who is inadequate for a role

  • 敷居が高い meaning something is high-level
敷居が高い means feeling ashamed to return to a place

The original meaning is about guilt or obligation, not difficulty; ハードルが高い means high difficulty

  • 確信犯 meaning someone who knowingly does wrong
確信犯 originally means someone who commits a crime out of political/religious conviction

The popular usage (intentional wrongdoing) has overtaken the original legal/political meaning

  • 頭痛が痛い (redundant: headache is painful)
    Simply say 頭痛がする or 頭が痛い

痛 already means pain in 頭痛; adding 痛い creates redundancy, like saying painful pain

  • 的を得る instead of 的を射る
的を射る (to shoot/hit the mark) is the correct form

While 的を得る has become widely used, the traditional correct expression uses 射る (to shoot at)
