Constructive Feedback in Japanese
Giving constructive feedback in Japanese culture requires softening direct criticism while remaining helpful.
～ていただけないでしょうか (te itadakenai deshou ka) is an extremely polite request meaning "would you mind...?" It softens feedback by framing suggestions as requests.
もう少し具体的に説明していただけないでしょうか。
*Would you mind explaining a bit more concretely?*
～ように思われます (you ni omowaremasu) means "it seems to me that" and presents observations indirectly, making criticism less confrontational.
この部分は改善の余地があるように思われます。
*It seems to me that this part has room for improvement.*
When giving feedback, start with positives (前向きな点), then use ように思われます to gently introduce areas for improvement (改善点). Frame suggestions as requests with ていただけないでしょうか rather than direct commands. This approach respects face while still delivering actionable feedback.
