The Art of Persuasion in Japanese
Japanese persuasion relies on indirect strategies, logical connectors, and purpose-expressing grammar. Unlike direct argument styles, Japanese favors building consensus gradually.
Purpose: ように vs ために
- ために — used with volitional verbs for intentional goals: *合格するために毎日勉強する。* (I study every day to pass.)
- ように — used with non-volitional verbs or potential forms: *聞こえるように大きな声で話した。* (I spoke loudly so it could be heard.)
Making Habits: ようにする
- ようにする — to make an effort to do something regularly: *早く寝るようにしている。* (I make it a point to go to bed early.)
Expressing Obligation
- べきだ — "should" with moral or logical weight: *環境を守るべきだ。* (We should protect the environment.)
- わけにはいかない — "cannot possibly" due to social or moral reasons: *約束を破るわけにはいかない。* (I can't possibly break my promise.)
These patterns help you build structured, persuasive arguments while maintaining the indirectness valued in Japanese communication.

자주 하는 실수
合格するように毎日勉強する。合格するために毎日勉強する。合格する is volitional, so ために is correct, not ように.
聞こえるために大きな声で話した。聞こえるように大きな声で話した。聞こえる is non-volitional/potential, so ように is required.
早く寝るようにする。早く寝るようにしている。For an ongoing habit, use ようにしている (continuous), not just ようにする.
環境を守ることべきだ。環境を守るべきだ。べきだ attaches directly to the dictionary form, not to こと.
約束を破るわけがいかない。約束を破るわけにはいかない。The correct pattern is わけにはいかない, not わけがいかない.
