Reporting Information with Critical Distance
To talk about fake news and report what others say without personally affirming it, Italian uses specific structures.
Si dice che... (They say that... / It is said that...)
- Si dice che il governo cambierà la legge. *(They say the government will change the law.)*
- Si dice che sia falso. *(It is said to be false.)*
- This structure is neutral: it reports without confirming.
Secondo... (According to...)
- Secondo alcuni esperti, la notizia è fuorviante. *(According to some experts, the news is misleading.)*
- Secondo il giornale, ci sono prove false. *(According to the newspaper, there is false evidence.)*
- Always followed by a source: *secondo + [source]*
Pare che... (It seems that... + subjunctive)
- Pare che la fonte non sia affidabile. *(It seems the source is not reliable.)*
- Pare che abbiano diffuso informazioni false. *(It seems they spread false information.)*
- Pare che + congiuntivo — widely used in Italian media.
Sembrerebbe che... (It would seem that...) — even more cautious
- Sembrerebbe che la notizia sia inventata. *(It would seem the news is made up.)*
Practical tip: When reading an Italian headline and reporting it without affirming, use *si dice che* or *pare che*.
