Polite Debating: Conceding and Counter-Arguing
In Italian, debating in a civilised way requires specific phrases to admit a point while maintaining your position.
Capisco il tuo punto, ma... (I understand your point, but...)
- Capisco il tuo punto, ma non sono d''accordo. *(I understand your point, but I disagree.)*
- Capisco il tuo punto di vista, ma la situazione è più complessa. *(I understand your perspective, but the situation is more complex.)*
Devo ammettere che... (I must admit that...)
- Devo ammettere che hai ragione su questo. *(I must admit that you are right about this.)*
- Devo ammettere che non avevo considerato questo aspetto. *(I must admit I had not considered this aspect.)*
Hai un punto valido, però... (You have a valid point, but...)
- Hai un punto valido, però ci sono anche altri fattori. *(You have a valid point, but there are also other factors.)*
Conceding and counter-arguing: The typical structure is: *Admit a point* + *ma/tuttavia/però* + *counter-argument*
- Capisco che sia difficile, tuttavia è necessario agire. *(I understand it is difficult, however action is necessary.)*
- Devo ammettere che hai ragione, però questa non è l''unica soluzione. *(I must admit you are right, but this is not the only solution.)*
