Irregular past participles

Some very common verbs have irregular past participles that you need to memorize:

  • fare → past participle fatto — auxiliary avere — Ho fatto una passeggiata. (I went for a walk.)
  • vedere → past participle visto — auxiliary avere — Hai visto il film? (Did you see the film?)
  • dire → past participle detto — auxiliary avere — Ha detto la verità. (He told the truth.)
  • bere → past participle bevuto — auxiliary avere — Abbiamo bevuto un caffè. (We drank a coffee.)
  • aprire → past participle aperto — auxiliary avere — Ho aperto la finestra. (I opened the window.)
  • essere → past participle stato — auxiliary essere — Sono stato in campagna. (I was in the countryside.)
  • venire → past participle venuto — auxiliary essere — È venuta con noi. (She came with us.)
  • rimanere → past participle rimasto — auxiliary essere — Siamo rimasti a casa. (We stayed at home.)

Essere vs Avere: how to choose?

Essere (participle agrees with the subject):

  • Movement verbs: andare, venire, partire, arrivare, tornare, uscire
  • State verbs: essere, stare, rimanere
  • All reflexive verbs: alzarsi, divertirsi, rilassarsi

Avere (no agreement):

  • Most transitive verbs: mangiare, vedere, fare, bere, leggere, cucinare

Agreement with essere

With essere, the past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject:

  • Lui è andato / Lei è andata (he went / she went)
  • Loro sono andati / Loro sono andate (they went — masc. / they went — fem.)

💬 Example: "Siamo andati in campagna e ci siamo divertiti molto." *(We went to the countryside and had a lot of fun.)*

💬 Example: "Maria è rimasta a casa perché era stanca." *(Maria stayed home because she was tired.)*
