Expressing your health in Italian

Mi sento + adjective

To describe how you feel, use mi sento (I feel) followed by an adjective. The adjective must agree with your gender:

Ho + symptom

To indicate a specific symptom, use ho (I have):

Note the pattern mal di + body part: mal di testa (headache), mal di schiena (backache), mal di denti (toothache).

At the doctor — useful phrases

Describing symptoms:

• Da quanto tempo? → How long? / Since when?
• Da ieri / da due giorni / da una settimana. → Since yesterday / for two days / for a week.
• Ho anche il naso chiuso. → I also have a stuffy nose.

The doctor may say:

• Apra la bocca. → Open your mouth. (formal)
• Respiri profondamente. → Breathe deeply. (formal)
• Le prescrivo una medicina. → I'll prescribe you a medicine.
• Prenda questa medicina due volte al giorno. → Take this medicine twice a day.
• Deve riposare. → You need to rest.

💬 Esempio: "Dottore, mi sento male. Ho la febbre e ho la tosse." → "Doctor, I don't feel well. I have a fever and a cough."

💬 Esempio: "Ho mal di testa da due giorni." → "I've had a headache for two days."

💬 Esempio: "Prenda questa medicina tre volte al giorno." → "Take this medicine three times a day."
