The formal imperative in Italian

In emergency situations, the formal imperative (Lei form) is often used to address strangers, professionals, or authorities. It is formed from the present subjunctive.

Formation of the formal imperative:

-are verbs : use -i ending — chiamare → Chiami! (Call!)
-ere verbs : use -a ending — prendere → Prenda! (Take!)
-ire verbs : use -a ending — sentire → Senta! (Listen!)

Emergency commands (formal):

Chiami il 118! → Call 118! (ambulance)
Chiami il 112! → Call 112! (police/carabinieri)
Chiami il 115! → Call 115! (fire brigade)
Vada all'ospedale! → Go to the hospital!
Aspetti qui! → Wait here!
Non si muova! → Don't move!
Si calmi! → Calm down!

Italian emergency numbers:

112 → General emergency (Carabinieri)
113 → Police (Polizia di Stato)
115 → Fire brigade (Vigili del Fuoco)
118 → Medical emergency (Ambulanza)

To express an urgent need, use Ho bisogno di... (I need...):

Ho bisogno di un'ambulanza. → I need an ambulance.
Ho bisogno di aiuto! → I need help!
Ho bisogno di un medico. → I need a doctor.
Ho bisogno della polizia. → I need the police.

Describing an emergency

C'è un incidente! → There's an accident!
C'è un incendio! → There's a fire!
Qualcuno sta male! → Someone is unwell!
Mi hanno rubato il portafoglio! → They stole my wallet!

💬 Esempio: "Aiuto! C'è un incidente! Chiami il 118!" → "Help! There's an accident! Call 118!"
💬 Esempio: "Ho bisogno di aiuto! Mi hanno rubato la borsa!" → "I need help! They stole my bag!"
