Describing someone

Adjectives: "essere" + adjective

In Italian, to describe someone, use essere + adjective. Adjectives must agree in gender and number with the subject they describe.

Adjective agreement — 4-form adjectives (ending in -o):

• Masculine : Singular alto / Plural alti
• Feminine : Singular alta / Plural alte
• Marco è alto. → Marco is tall.
• Elena è alta. → Elena is tall.
• Marco e Luca sono alti. → Marco and Luca are tall.
• Elena e Sofia sono alte. → Elena and Sofia are tall.

Adjective agreement — 2-form adjectives (ending in -e):

• Masc. & Fem. : Singular giovane / Plural giovani
• Marco è giovane. / Elena è giovane.
• Marco e Luca sono giovani. / Elena e Sofia sono giovani.

"Bello" is irregular before a noun:

• un bel ragazzo (a handsome boy) — before most consonants
• un bell'uomo (a handsome man) — before a vowel
• una bella donna (a beautiful woman) — feminine singular
• dei begli occhi (beautiful eyes) — before vowels, z, s+consonant
• dei bei capelli (beautiful hair) — before most consonants

Common adjectives for describing people:

• simpatico/a → nice, likeable
• antipatico/a → unpleasant
• timido/a → shy
• divertente → funny
• intelligente → smart

💬 Esempio: "Mia sorella è alta e simpatica." → "My sister is tall and nice."

💬 Esempio: "Ha i capelli neri e gli occhi azzurri." → "He/She has black hair and blue eyes."

💬 Esempio: "Il mio amico è un bel ragazzo, molto simpatico." → "My friend is a handsome boy, very nice."
