Irregular Past Verbs & Expressing Enjoyment
Several common Hindi verbs have irregular past forms you need to memorize:
- जाना (to go) → गया (m) / गई (f) / गए (m plural)
- खाना (to eat) → खाया (m) / खाई (f)
- पीना (to drink) → पिया (m) / पी (f)
- देखना (to see) → देखा (m) / देखी (f)
- सोना (to sleep) → सोया (m) / सोई (f)
Expressing enjoyment:
- मज़ा आया — "it was fun" (literally "fun came")
- बहुत अच्छा लगा — "it felt very good"
- मुझे पसंद आया — "I liked it"
Note: मज़ा आया is always masculine — never say मज़ा आई!
Gender agreement reminder: Intransitive past verbs agree with the subject's gender. Transitive past verbs agree with the object's gender (with ने construction).

- हम गाँव गए।Saying we went to the village
- वहाँ बहुत मज़ा आया!Saying it was a lot of fun there
- हमने ताज़ा खाना खाया।Saying you ate fresh food

자주 하는 실수
मज़ा आईमज़ा आयामज़ा is masculine, so always use आया, never आई
मैं गई (male speaker)मैं गयाPast intransitive verbs must agree with the speaker gender — male speakers say गया
हमने गएहम गएजाना is intransitive — never use ने with it in the past tense
