Sending a Text Message
The verb भेजना (bhejnā) — to send:
This is a regular verb. In the present tense:
- मैं भेजता हूँ (maiṅ bhejtā hūṅ) — I send (male)
- मैं भेजती हूँ (maiṅ bhejtī hūṅ) — I send (female)
💬 "मैं तुम्हें मैसेज भेजता हूँ।" (maiṅ tumheṅ maisej bhejtā hūṅ.) → "I send you a message."
Saying "to you" — तुम्हें (tumheṅ):
When sending something to someone:
- तुम्हें (tumheṅ) — to you (informal)
- आपको (āpko) — to you (formal)
- उसको (usko) — to him/her
💬 "मैं आपको फ़ोटो भेजता हूँ।" (maiṅ āpko foṭo bhejtā hūṅ.) → "I send you a photo."
Asking someone to reply — जवाब देना (javāb denā):
💬 "जवाब दो!" (javāb do!) → "Reply!" (informal)
💬 "कृपया जवाब दीजिए।" (kṛpayā javāb dījiye.) → "Please reply." (formal)
Common texting phrases:
- ठीक है (ṭhīk hai) — OK
- हाँ (hāṅ) — Yes
- अभी नहीं (abhī nahīṅ) — Not now
- बाद में (bād meṅ) — Later
표현
- मैं रास्ते में हूँ।I am on my way.
- ठीक है, कल मिलते हैं।OK, see you tomorrow.
- थोड़ी देर में आता/आती हूँ।I will be there in a little while. (m/f)
- मैसेज मिला।Got your message.
- क्या हुआ?What happened? / What is up?
자주 하는 실수
मैं रास्ते पर हूँमैं रास्ते में हूँUse mein (में) not par (पर) when saying on the way/in transit. Raaste mein literally means in the road and is the correct idiom.
मैसेज भेजा मैंनेमैंने मैसेज भेजाIn standard Hindi, the subject (main + ne = मैंने) comes first in SOV order. Putting it at the end sounds unnatural.
कल मिलेंगे हमकल मिलते हैंThe colloquial phrase for see you tomorrow is kal milte hain (literally we meet tomorrow). Kal milenge is also correct but more formal.
