Talking on the Phone
Answering the phone: हैलो (hailo)
In Hindi, people say हैलो (hailo) when picking up the phone — borrowed from English "hello."
💬 "हैलो, कौन बोल रहा है?" (hailo, kaun bol rahā hai?) → "Hello, who is speaking?"
Asking to speak to someone:
Use से बात करना (se bāt karnā) — "to talk with":
💬 "मैं राज से बात करना चाहता हूँ।" (maiṅ Rāj se bāt karnā chāhtā hūṅ.) → "I want to talk to Raj."
Polite requests on the phone:
- रुकिए (rukiye) — Please hold / wait (polite)
- फिर से बोलिए (phir se boliye) — Please say that again
Ending a call:
- अच्छा, बाद में बात करते हैं (acchā, bād meṅ bāt karte haiṅ) → "Okay, let's talk later"
- फ़ोन रखता हूँ (fon rakhtā hūṅ) → "I'm hanging up now"
Key verb: बोलना (bolnā) — to speak
- मैं बोलता हूँ (maiṅ boltā hūṅ) — I speak (male)
- मैं बोलती हूँ (maiṅ boltī hūṅ) — I speak (female)

자주 하는 실수
मैं बात करना चाहता हूँ राज सेमैं राज से बात करना चाहता हूँIn Hindi, the person you want to talk to (राज से) comes before the verb phrase (बात करना)
फ़ोन पर बोलफ़ोन पर बोलोThe informal imperative needs the -ो ending: बोलो (bolo), not just बोल
कौन बोल रही है?कौन बोल रहा है?When the gender of the caller is unknown, use the masculine default रहा है (rahā hai)
मैं फ़ोन काटता हूँमैं फ़ोन रखता हूँIn Hindi, you say रखना (to put down) the phone, not काटना (to cut) when hanging up politely
