Discussing contemporary art requires impersonal structures (unpersönliche Strukturen) that are common in German academic and critical discourse.
"Es wird + Partizip II" (impersonal passive):
- *Es wird oft behauptet, dass moderne Kunst keine echte Kunst sei.* (It is often claimed that modern art is not real art.)
- *Es wird diskutiert, ob diese Installation Kunst ist.* (It is being discussed whether this installation is art.)
"Man + Verb" (impersonal one):
- *Man kann das Werk auf verschiedene Weisen interpretieren.* (One can interpret the work in various ways.)
- *Man sollte Kunst nicht nur nach dem Preis bewerten.* (One should not judge art only by its price.)
Impersonal expressions for opinions:
- *Es lässt sich argumentieren, dass...* (It can be argued that...)
