Indirect speech is essential when reporting travel problems.
Basic indirect speech:
- *Er hat mir gesagt, dass der Flug gestrichen ist.* (He told me that the flight is cancelled.)
- *Sie hat gefragt, ob ich eine Versicherung habe.* (She asked if I have insurance.)
dass vs. ob:
- dass (that) — for statements: *Er meinte, dass das Hotel voll ist.*
- ob (whether/if) — for yes/no questions: *Sie fragte, ob ich Hilfe brauche.*
Reporting in travel situations:
- *Der Beamte sagte, dass ich zum Konsulat gehen soll.* (The official said I should go to the consulate.)
- *Man hat mir erklärt, dass die Erstattung sechs Wochen dauert.* (I was told that the refund takes six weeks.)
