French literature spans centuries of distinct styles. Recognizing an author's voice is essential:

Victor Hugo — Grand, lyrical prose with social consciousness:

"Ceux qui vivent, ce sont ceux qui luttent." — Those who live are those who struggle.

Marcel Proust — Long, intricate sentences exploring memory and consciousness:

His sentences often span entire paragraphs, mimicking the flow of thought.

Albert Camus — Sparse, philosophical minimalism:
