Discussing modern ethical dilemmas in French requires literary and formal conditional structures, including rare inversions.

Literary conditional inversions (inversions conditionnelles): These are extremely formal structures found in philosophical and literary writing:

  • *N'eût-il pas été préférable d'agir autrement ?* (Would it not have been preferable to act otherwise?)
  • *Eût-elle su la vérité, elle aurait agi différemment.* (Had she known the truth, she would have acted differently.)
  • *Fût-il le seul à s'opposer, il maintiendrait sa position.* (Even if he were the only one to oppose, he would maintain his position.)

Formal conditional structures:

  • *Si l'on considérait l'autonomie comme un droit absolu, tout consentement deviendrait superflu.* (If one considered autonomy as an absolute right, all consent would become superfluous.)
  • *Quand bien même le préjudice serait minime, l'obligation morale demeure.* (Even if the harm were minimal, the moral obligation remains.)

Ethical vocabulary in context:

  • *Ce dilemme oppose la vertu individuelle au devoir collectif.* (This dilemma pits individual virtue against collective duty.)
  • *L'approche utilitariste privilégie le bien du plus grand nombre.* (The utilitarian approach favors the good of the greatest number.)

표현

This ethical dilemma has no simple solution.
  • L'utilitarisme soulève des objections. The utilitarian approach raises objections.
  • L'autonomie du patient...The patient's autonomy must be respected.
  • Le consentement éclairé.Informed consent is indispensable.
  • La vertu ne suffit pas ici.Virtue alone cannot resolve this.
  • Cela pose un problème moral fondamental. This poses a fundamental moral problem.
  • Minimiser le préjudice. We have the obligation to minimize harm.
  • Droits individuels vs bien commun.Individual rights vs. the common good.
  • Quel est notre devoir ici ?What is our duty in this situation?
  • N'eût-il pas été plus juste ?Would it not have been fairer? (literary)

The preposition d' (de) is required before the infinitive agir after préférable.

  • Quand bien même le préjudice est minime...
Quand bien même le préjudice serait minime...

Quand bien même requires the conditional (serait), not the indicative (est).

After si, use the imperfect (considérait), never the conditional. Use l'on in formal register.

  • Ce dilemme oppose la vertu au devoir. (with wrong agreement)

In literary inversions, fût replaces si + il était — a hallmark of elevated French.

  • Les droits fondamentaux impose des obligations.
Les droits fondamentaux imposent des obligations.

The verb must agree with the plural subject droits: imposent, not impose.
