Telling a news story in French requires mastering the interplay between imparfait and passé composé in narration.
Imparfait sets the scene (background, descriptions, ongoing actions):
- *Il faisait nuit.* (It was nighttime.)
- *La rue était calme.* (The street was quiet.)
- *Le témoin marchait sur le trottoir.* (The witness was walking on the sidewalk.)
Passé composé tells what happened (sudden events, actions):
- *Soudain, une voiture a freiné.* (Suddenly, a car braked.)
- *La police est arrivée rapidement.* (The police arrived quickly.)
Combined narration pattern: *Il pleuvait quand l'accident a eu lieu. Les pompiers sont arrivés pendant que la police interrogeait les témoins.*
Useful narrative markers:
- *Soudain / Tout à coup* — Suddenly
- *À ce moment-là* — At that moment
- *Pendant que* — While (+ imparfait)
- *Quand / Lorsque* — When (+ passé composé for the interrupting action)

Pendant que je marchais, je marchais vite.Pendant que je marchais, j'ai entendu un cri.'Pendant que' introduces the background; the main event should be in passé composé.
