The Passé Composé with Être

Some French verbs use être (not avoir) as their auxiliary in the passé composé. These are mostly verbs of movement or change of state.

How to Form It

Use the present tense of être + a past participle that agrees with the subject:

Je suis allé(e) à la campagne. — I went to the countryside.

Elle est partie tôt. — She left early.

Nous sommes arrivés à midi. — We arrived at noon.

Agreement with the Subject

The past participle must agree in gender and number:

  • Masculine singular: il est allé

  • Masculine plural: ils sont allés
  • Feminine plural: elles sont allées
