The Passé Composé with Avoir

The passé composé is the most common past tense in French. It describes completed actions in the past — things you did yesterday, last week, or at a specific time.

How to Form It

Use the present tense of avoir + a past participle:

J'ai mangé une pizza. — I ate a pizza.
Tu as regardé un film. — You watched a movie.
Il a travaillé hier. — He worked yesterday.

Regular Past Participles

-er verbs → -é: manger → mangé, jouer → joué
-ir verbs → -i: finir → fini, choisir → choisi
-re verbs → -u: vendre → vendu, attendre → attendu

La semaine dernière — last week
Ce matin — this morning

Remember to always include the auxiliary avoir — never say je mangé

Don't forget the accent on the past participle: regardé, not regarde
~~J'ai joué le football~~
J'ai joué au football.
Use jouer au (not jouer le) for sports
~~Hier j'ai travaille~~
Hier, j'ai travaillé.
The past participle needs the accent -é to show past tense, not present -e
~~J'ai acheté des pomme~~
J'ai acheté des pommes.
Des requires a plural noun — pommes, not pomme
