영어로 논문 논제 방어하기
C1에서 논제를 방어한다는 것은 내 의견을 크게 말하는 일이 아니에요. 근거를 제시하고, 반론을 미리 인정한 뒤, 왜 내 주장이 여전히 설득력 있는지 논리로 보여 주는 일이에요. 한국어 발표에서도 이 흐름은 같지만, 영어 학술 토론에서는 표현의 완화가 특히 중요해요.
탄탄한 논증의 네 요소
1. Claim: 분명하고 구체적인 주장 2. Evidence: 데이터, 인용, 사실 3. Warrant: 근거와 주장을 잇는 논리 4. Concession + Rebuttal: 한계를 인정하고 반박
학술적 완화 표현
단정하지 않는 편이 오히려 더 신뢰를 줘요.
- This suggests that... ( This proves that...보다 안전해요.)
- It could be argued that...
- The evidence points towards...
반론을 무시하지 마세요. 상대의 우려를 정확히 요약한 뒤, 자료가 그 우려를 어디까지 지지하는지 보여 주면 논제가 더 강해져요.
표현
- I would argue that...수사적 여지를 두고 주장 도입
- The evidence points towards...과장하지 않고 근거를 제시
- I acknowledge X, but contend that Y양보 뒤 자신의 입장을 방어
- The objection doesn't undermine my claim일부를 인정하며 비판을 반박
- It could be argued that... ; however...주장 뒤에 즉시 한계를 덧붙임
- This holds true even when we consider...예상 반론에도 입장을 유지
- The crux of the matter is...논쟁의 핵심 쟁점을 밝힘
- I take issue with the premise that...상대 주장 전제에 이의 제기
자주 하는 실수
My thesis proves that remote work is always better.My thesis suggests that remote work tends to increase productivity in knowledge-intensive sectors.proves와 always는 학술 맥락에서 지나치게 절대적이에요. suggests, tends to처럼 완화하세요.
I agree with the criticism but my point is still right.While I concede the merit of this objection, I maintain that the core argument holds because...viva에서는 비격식 표현 대신 양보와 반박을 갖춘 격식 구조를 쓰세요.
Lots of evidence shows this is true.A substantial body of evidence supports the claim that...lots of는 친근한 말이에요. substantial body of, considerable evidence를 쓰세요.
This proves my hypothesis is correct.This finding is consistent with / lends support to the hypothesis that...과학에서는 prove보다 support, corroborate, be consistent with가 더 적절해요.
The evidence undeniably proves my thesis beyond question.The evidence strongly supports my thesis.증거가 의심의 여지 없다고 하면 토론을 닫아 버려요. strongly supports처럼 완화하세요.
While critics may disagree, but my argument stands.While critics may disagree, my argument stands.while과 but은 둘 다 양보 연결어라 함께 쓰면 문법적으로 중복돼요.
