영어로 이민 이야기하기
한 단계 위의 간접화법
이민 주제는 정치인, 기관, 통계를 인용할 일이 많아요. 바로 여기서 한국어와 영어가 크게 갈려요. 한국어는 "간다고 했어요"처럼 인용 어미만 붙이고 안쪽 시제는 그대로 두지만, 영어는 전달 동사가 과거면 안쪽 시제를 한 칸씩 뒤로 밀어요.
- 현재 → 과거: "We welcome all refugees." → She said they welcomed all refugees.
- 과거 → 과거완료: "People fled the conflict." → He reported that people had fled the conflict.
- will → would: "We will reform policy." → They promised they would reform policy.
- must → had to: "We must act." → She insisted that they had to act.
한국어 화자가 가장 많이 놓치는 건 will과 must예요. 「할 거예요」, 「해야 해요」가 인용 안에서도 모양이 그대로라, 영어에서도 그대로 두기 쉽거든요.

자주 하는 실수

He told that the borders are open.He said that the borders were open.tell은 듣는 사람을 목적어로 받아요. 목적어 없이 쓰려면 say를 쓰고, 안쪽 시제도 과거로 밀어요.

Migrants are integrated in the society.Migrants are integrated into society.integrate는 into와 짝을 이뤄요. 사회 전반을 뜻하는 society에는 the를 붙이지 않아요.

Many immigrants come for searching a job.Many immigrants come to search for a job.목적을 말할 때는 come to + 동사원형을 써요. for 뒤에 -ing를 붙이지 않아요.
