Expressing Regret: Had ik maar... / Was ik maar...
Dutch expresses deep regret and wishes about the past using maar (only/just) with inverted past tense constructions.
Had + subject + maar + past participle:
- Had ik maar eerder ingegrepen! — If only I had intervened earlier!
- Had ze maar naar me geluisterd! — If only she had listened to me!
Was + subject + maar + adjective/past participle:
- Was ik maar sterker geweest! — If only I had been stronger!
- Was het maar anders gelopen! — If only things had gone differently!
These can also express present wishes with the imperfect:
- Had ik maar meer zelfvertrouwen. — If only I had more self-confidence.
- Was ik maar niet zo naïef. — If only I were not so naive.
Kon + subject + maar expresses wished-for abilities:
- Kon ik maar de tijd terugdraaien! — If only I could turn back time!
These structures carry strong emotional weight and are crucial for discussing personal regrets and toxic relationship patterns.
