Inversion in Conditional Sentences

In formal Dutch, conditional sentences can drop als (if) by inverting the subject and verb. This mirrors English constructions like "Had I known..."

Standard: Als ik het had geweten, had ik anders gehandeld. Inverted: Had ik het geweten, dan had ik anders gehandeld.

This pattern works with all conditional tenses:

Had hij eerder gebeld, dan was het probleem opgelost. — Had he called earlier, the problem would have been solved.
Mocht u vragen hebben, neem dan contact op. — Should you have questions, please get in touch.

The word dan often appears in the main clause after inversion. Mocht is used for polite or hypothetical conditions, especially in business contexts.

Entrepreneurs frequently use these structures in pitches and proposals to sound professional and decisive.

The main clause needs dan and proper word order after inversion.
~~Ware het niet de steun, we hadden gefaald.~~
Ware het niet voor de steun, dan hadden we gefaald.
Use voor after niet, and add dan with inverted word order in the main clause.
~~Mocht het budget toelaat, we investeren.~~
Mocht het budget het toelaten, dan investeren we.
After mocht, the verb goes to the end in infinitive form; the main clause uses dan + inversion.
