Agreeing and Disagreeing in Dutch

To agree in Dutch, the simplest phrases are "Ik ben het ermee eens" (I agree with it) and "Dat klopt" (That is correct). Note the structure: er + mee + eens — the pronoun "er" replaces the thing you agree with.

Ik ben het ermee eens dat we moeten veranderen. — I agree that we need to change.

To disagree, use "Ik ben het er niet mee eens" (I disagree). Notice that niet is inserted before mee eens.

Ik ben het er niet mee eens. — I do not agree.

For softer disagreement, use "Dat klopt, maar..." (That is correct, but...) or "Ja, maar..." (Yes, but...). These help you sound polite while introducing your counterpoint.

A common pattern is combining agreement with a contrasting clause using maar (but), hoewel (although), or toch (still/yet):

Je hebt gelijk, maar toch vind ik dat... — You are right, but still I think that...

The word toch is very Dutch — it adds nuance meaning "nevertheless" or "after all" and is used constantly in conversation. Mastering it will make your Dutch sound much more natural.
