Expressing Opinions in Dutch
In Dutch, the most common way to express your opinion is with "Ik vind dat..." (I think that...). Unlike English, the verb vinden is used for opinions, not denken (which means "to think" as in reasoning).
Ik vind dat het belangrijk is. — I think it is important.
Another key phrase is "Volgens mij..." (According to me / In my opinion). This is very natural in spoken Dutch.
Volgens mij is dat niet waar. — In my opinion, that is not true.
Notice the inverted word order after "Volgens mij": the verb comes before the subject. This is because "Volgens mij" occupies the first position in the sentence, and Dutch requires the verb in second position (V2 rule).
For stronger opinions, use "Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat..." (I am convinced that...) or "Naar mijn mening..." (In my opinion..., more formal).
Naar mijn mening moeten we meer investeren. — In my opinion, we should invest more.
The word dat introduces a subclause where the verb moves to the end of the clause. This SOV pattern in subclauses is essential at B1 level.
