When you lose something in Dutch, use kwijt at the end of the sentence: *Ik ben mijn paspoort kwijt* (I've lost my passport). To report theft, say *Iemand heeft mijn portemonnee gestolen* (Someone stole my wallet). To ask for help politely, use Kunt u mij helpen? (Can you help me? — formal). At a police station, you'll need to *aangifte doen* (file a report). Notice that kwijt is always placed at the end: *Ik ben mijn telefoon kwijt*, never *Ik ben kwijt mijn telefoon*. Use kapot for broken items: *Mijn koffer is kapot* (My suitcase is broken).
