Fake News and Media Literacy in Chinese
At B1, you learn to express doubt and report unconfirmed information carefully.
Hedging phrases — expressing doubt:
- 据说 (jùshuō) — it is said that / allegedly
- 有人声称 (yǒurén chēngchēng) — someone claims
- 不一定是真的 (bù yīdìng shì zhēn de) — not necessarily true
Reported speech patterns:
- 他说这件事是真的。*(Tā shuō zhè jiàn shì shì zhēn de.)* — He said this is true.
- 据称，这条信息是假的。*(Jùchēng, zhè tiáo xìnxī shì jiǎ de.)* — It is alleged this information is false.
Checking the source:
- 这条新闻的来源可靠吗？*(Zhè tiáo xīnwén de láiyuán kěkào ma?)* — Is the source of this news reliable?
- 你在哪里看到这条信息的？*(Nǐ zài nǎlǐ kàndào zhè tiáo xìnxī de?)* — Where did you see this information?
Key tip: Always pair hedging language with evidence — 据说 alone isn't enough; add 据说...但还没证实 (reportedly, but not yet confirmed).

자주 하는 실수
据说，这是真的！据说这件事发生了，但还没证实。据说 implies uncertainty — do not follow it with absolute certainty markers like !. Always add a hedging follow-up.
来源是可靠不可靠？这条新闻的来源可靠吗？The correct question form uses 吗 at the end — the A不A question pattern (可靠不可靠) works but sounds unnatural here.
我不确定，它可能是假新闻也。我不确定，它可能是假新闻。也 in this position is redundant — 可能 alone expresses the uncertainty without needing 也.
核实是重要的。核实信息很重要。核实 is a verb — specify what to verify (信息) and use 很 before the adjective for a natural Chinese sentence.
这文章缺乏依据客观。这篇文章缺乏客观依据。Adjectives precede nouns in Chinese — 客观依据 (objective basis), not 依据客观. Also add the measure word 篇 for articles.
